Statement on the use of AI
It seems impossible to avoid AI as it becomes embedded in the software we use every day.
However, as a creative practitioner, I believe it should be used as a tool to assist creativity, not to take it from human hands.
In my editing work I use assistive AI, as it is embedded in software such as Word and search engines such as Google, and professional tools such as Grammarly, which can highlight issues. This can speed up the process and be of benefit to both my clients and myself. But there’s is no substitute for the human eye or experience. So, I don’t use any generative AI such as ChatGPT, and I will never run a client’s work through any AI software. I’m not feeding the machine!
I also ask clients to sign an editorial agreement, to specify how they have used AI in any submissions for editorial services.
Like many editors, if a submission has been in part generated through AI, I charge an extra fee. This is because AI-generated text does not convey personality or human creativity, so it actually takes longer to edit, involving substantial rewriting in order to put the originality back in. I much prefer to work on genuine human-authored text! An editor is your writing partner and mentor; ultimately, you will learn more about the craft through working with an editor than you will from using AI, and your work will be all the better for it.
